About This Webinar: This webinar describes why laboratory errors occur and outlines strong technology-based strategies for error reduction. Topics covered include: how organizations slowly drift into an error-prone condition; distinguishing weak from strong patient safety interventions in the clinical laboratory; examples of strong interventions, including automation, instrument consolidation, electronic medical records; and more!

Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar you will be able to:

  1. Define medical euphemisms and why they are bad for quality improvement.
  2. Describe how organizations can slowly drift into an error-prone state.
  3. Define cognitive versus non-cognitive errors and why these error classes determine what interventions to choose to reduce errors.
  4. Given a particular class of laboratory errors, describe how a strong technology-based intervention would reduce or eliminate the error.
