Originally Recorded: April 2008

Length of Presentation: Approximately 60 minutes

About This Webinar: OSHA's Revised Bloodborne Pathogens Standard of 2001 reduced the number of occupational sharps injuries to healthcare professionals by mandating using safer needle devices.

Did you know? The CDC declared a healthcare safety challenge to eliminate occupational needlestick injuries by 2010!

How will your laboratory achieve this critically important goal?

This webinar offers the latest information related to sharps safety, including national trends and benchmarking on needlestick injuries so you can evaluate your organization's sharps safety program. Discover what statistics are used to benchmark and monitor needlestick injuries and what types of data are important to analyze the cause of injuries to better choose reduction strategies. Learn which types of sharps are most problem prone, and whether the various safety-engineered sharps devices and other work practice strategies reduce occupational sharps injuries.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar you will be able to:

  1. Describe practical approaches to monitoring and analyzing occupational needlestick injuries.
  2. Describe how to recognize "preventable" needlestick injuries and identify methods to reduce these injuries.
  3. Describe barriers and drivers in safer sharps device identification, selection, and implementation.

Level of Instruction: Basic

Suggested Audience: Lab directors, lab managers, technologists, phlebotomists, laboratory safety, infection control, and IVD industry representatives
