About This Program: Part 2 of this two-part self-study course on managing preanalytical variables in venipuncture collection defines and categorizes preanalytical variables as controllable or uncontrollable. Part 2 briefly reviews variables discussed in Part 1, and then concentrates on patient physiological factors which cannot be controlled by the clinical laboratory.

While not mandatory, it is recommended that "Laboratory Performance: Managing Preanalytical Variables in Venipuncture Collection, Part 1" be taken prior to taking Part 2.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this program you will be able to:

  1. Identify the preanalytical phase.
  2. Recognize the importance of understanding preanalytical variables in blood specimen collection.
  3. Understand and identify contributing factors in blood specimen collection, processing, handling, and their effect(s) upon patient test results.
  4. Use this knowledge to minimize occurrences of preanalytical error in your institution and enhance sample quality, accuracy of laboratory data, and quality of patient care.

Level of Instruction: Intermediate

Suggested Audience: Phlebotomists, lab managers, medical technologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals responsible for the collection, handling, processing, and diagnostic testing of blood specimens in the clinical laboratory.
