About This Program: Traditionally, efforts to reduce errors and improve patient safety in the practice of Laboratory Medicine have been based on quality benchmarking and performance tracking techniques. Over the past several decades, advances in lean production techniques have provided models for performance improvement that may be more effective and more efficient than traditional approaches. This program will provide a broad overview of how lean production techniques may be applied in the clinical laboratory to reduce errors and improve patient safety.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this self-study program you will be able to: 

1. Describe the mechanics and shortcomings of the traditional benchmarking approach to error reduction.
2. Explain what the lean production system is and how it works. 
3. Identify those practices employed in the lean production system that can be applied in the clinical laboratory to reduce patient errors and improve patient safety.

He has practiced Laboratory Medicine and Pathology for 25 years and is a nationally recognized expert in clinical quality, medical outcome assessment, patient safety, medical service delivery, and best practices methodologies. Dr. Novis has served as a Trustee of Wentworth Douglass Hospital. He was honored by the New Hampshire Hospital Association for his exemplary performance in hospital governance with an Outstanding Trustee of the Year Award (2005). He also serves as an expert consultant to the University of Pittsburgh/CDC Cooperative Agreement Assessment of Best Practices for Standardized Quality Assurance Activities.
